What to expect

Searchable PDF

The export keeps the original page appearance and adds invisible text for search and selection. Rewriting a PDF may remove or invalidate forms, annotations, bookmarks, signatures, and some metadata. Keep your original file.

Recognition quality

Results depend on scan clarity, language, rotation, and layout. OCR is not proofread or guaranteed accurate. Inspect the text and exported file before using it for important decisions.

Processing limits

PDFs are limited to 20 MB and 50 pages. A single OCR run is limited to 20 pages and 30 megapixels. Page previews and recognition depend on available device memory and browser support.

How to use the OCR PDF editor

  1. Choose a PDF. Add one PDF up to 20 MB and 50 pages. Pages are read locally.
  2. Select and organize pages. Choose up to 20 pages for OCR. Move pages, rotate, or remove them from the output copy.
  3. Recognize and review. Pick English or Swahili, run OCR, and edit the text for each recognized page.
  4. Export a searchable copy. Download the PDF with its original page artwork and an invisible text layer, or download the text as a .txt file.

Local processing

PDF rendering, text recognition, page changes, and export run in your browser. The OCR engine and language model are downloaded on first use; this can require a connection and several megabytes of data.

Recognition is a draft

OCR may omit or misread characters, tables, columns, handwriting, and low-resolution scans. Review important content against the original page.

Keep the original

Rewriting can affect signatures, forms, links, annotations, bookmarks, and metadata. This tool does not securely remove underlying content or redact PDFs.

Frequently asked questions

Does OCR upload my PDF?

No. The PDF is read, rendered, recognized, and exported in your browser. The OCR engine and selected language data are downloaded from jsDelivr on first use; the PDF contents and filename are not included in those requests. Tesseract.js may cache engine and language files in browser storage, but the tool does not persist your PDF, recognized text, or output.

What does a searchable PDF contain?

It keeps the original page appearance and adds an invisible text layer so text can be searched and selected. Editing recognized text places that edited page text in a reading layer at the top of the page.

Which languages and limits are supported?

This version offers English and Swahili. Each PDF can be up to 20 MB and 50 pages. One recognition run can include up to 20 pages and 30 megapixels total.

How accurate is the recognized text?

OCR results depend on image clarity, page orientation, language, font, and layout. Text is not independently proofread. Compare it against the source pages before relying on it.

What changes when I export?

The export may remove or invalidate digital signatures and may not preserve forms, annotations, bookmarks, or all metadata. Your original file is not changed, so keep it as your source.

Is this a secure redaction or PDF text editor?

No. This tool adds recognized text and can rearrange, rotate, or remove pages. It does not erase sensitive content from the original page artwork, replace existing PDF text, or provide verified redaction.
